The Mountain States Mennonite Conference Women & Men’s Retreats both returned after a two year pandemic interruption. Women’s Retreat was last held in March of 2020, just as the impacts of coronavirus was beginning

The theme for the return of Women’s Retreat was “Meeting the Holy in Nature: Forest Bathing” was led by Jane Scanlon Thanks to Jane Scanlon who led guided, faith-based forest bathing walks along with enjoying a tea ceremony using local plants with known health benefits.

The following helps describe what “Forest Bathing” is. How often do we get captivated by moments of awe and joy in nature? Christian theologians and mystics of many faith traditions view creation as God’s first act of divine revelation. Stepping out of the swirl of busyness and noise into the quiet of our beautiful retreat space, participants were invited to deepen their relationship with God, creation, others and self through the peaceful practice of Forest Bathing. Rooted in Japan, (“shinrin-yoku”) this wellness practice provides a sequence for quieting the mind, opening the senses and imagination and cultivating a mindful way of interacting with nature to invite healing that serves both people and the “more-than-human” world. Health benefits from forest bathing walks include lowered blood pressure, decreased anxiety and stress hormone levels, improved immune, cardiovascular and nervous system functioning and often improved focus, creativity, sleep and all around JOY!
